Educational Objectives

Each course is designed to maximize the instructional learning within a specific category. A summarization for each category is listed below. Two or more specific educational objectives are included within each course.

CULTURE

Objectives in this category will include topics such as developing an understanding of cultural identity and affiliation, group dynamics, cultural stereotypes, marginality and dominance. Recognizing barriers that distinguish group membership and powerlessness within a culture. Refining concepts of respecting and valuing diversity to broaden personal perspectives regarding disparate communities. Investigate concepts of languaculture and identify systems of oppression and bias.

EDUCATIONAL

Objectives in this category will include topics such as developing an understanding of concepts to improve deaf education including language development, educational outcomes and perspectives of participants in the deaf educational realm. Recognizing complexities of both sign and spoken languages through research materials as well as printed materials and video presentations. Refine an awareness of current research topics related to effective communication.

ETHICS

Objectives in this category will include topics such as developing an understanding of ethical issues not only within interpreting situations and the field of interpreting but also in the bigger aspect of general society. Refining concepts of the depth of the RID Code of Professional Conduct and how it applies to our work. Gaining an awareness of how individuals behaviors and rationalizations lead to errors in ethical judgment. Reflecting on moral reasoning, motivation and ethical beliefs.

EXPERIENTIAL

Objectives in this category will include topics such as interpreting pragmatics and individual skill development. Developing an understanding of interpersonal communication from both interpreting and well as Deaf perspectives. Recognizing areas of growth within individual interpreting skills and settings. Refining the concepts of languaculture and sociolinguistics. Investigating areas that enhance the interpreting process.

LEGAL

Objectives in this category will include topics such as developing an understanding of group dynamics, marginality, cultural identity, affiliation and oppression in legal situations. Reflect on interpreter’s roles and skill development in courtroom protocol and various legal settings. Review legal statutes/policies/concepts and enhance skills development related to interpreted legal matters. Strengthen legal perspectives with increased knowledge and build competence of legal terminology and procedures.

MEDICAL

Objectives in this category will include topics such as developing an understanding of various diseases/disorders, cultural identity and affiliation and cultural stereotypes within the medical system and community. Refining concepts of comprehension of the patients and providers perspective when interacting within the health hierarchy. Investigate and identify systems of oppression and bias within medicine for varied communities. Recognizing the effects of diagnoses and how labels influence social interaction and lifestyle.

MEDICAL ETHICS

Objectives in this category will include topics that present as medical ethical concepts. Develop an understanding of policies that raise medical ethics questions such as informed consent, health care inequities and marginality in medical situations. Recognizing principles in global ethical laws and directives. Refining background knowledge and enhancing comprehension of ethical considerations when interpreting. Investigating research fundamentals as they relate to health care settings.

MENTAL HEALTH

Objectives in this category will include topics such as developing an understanding of mental health issues related to societal and familial perspectives, Refining an understanding of diagnosed mental health conditions and diagnosis labeling. Recognizing specific mental illnesses and conditions common within interpreting situations to clarify concepts and terminology. Establish a more in depth comprehensive knowledge of various mental health conditions/medications and how they affect identity and thought processes.

PPO

Objectives in this category will include topics such as developing an understanding of individual, societal, institutionalized, systemic oppression and abuse of assumed power and privilege. Recognizing assumed authority/dominance and internalized biases. Various system of oppression (e.g. ableism, ageism, audism, classism, racism, sexism), marginalization and internalized supremacy. Refining concepts of challenging and respecting diversity, providing equal access, cultural competence, identity, intersectionality. Building a basis to develop sensitivity, build competence and knowledge with the goal of dismantling oppressive systems.
