BOOK
The Quiet Ear
by Raymond Antrobus

Raymond Antrobus was diagnosed with high-frequency deafness at age seven and discovered he had "missing sounds," such as bird calls, whistles, and kettles, which led to misunderstandings in school where teachers thought he was slow or disruptive. The book traces his experiences navigating both mainstream and deaf education systems, the shame associated with miscommunication, and his journey to find community and identity. Antrobus reflects on his mixed-race heritage, the decline of deaf education in Britain, and the importance of finding role models within D/deaf culture, including historical and contemporary figures from various creative fields. He examines how his deafness shaped his relationship with language, sound, and the world, using poetry as a means to integrate his experiences and identities.
