MOVIE
The Insider

The true story of Jeffrey Wigand, a former vice president of research at tobacco company Brown & Williamson, who became a whistleblower after discovering that the industry knowingly manipulated nicotine levels to increase addiction while publicly denying it. After his research on reduced-harm cigarettes proved unsatisfactory, he refused to sign a confidentiality agreement preventing him from speaking out. Subsequently, he agreed to be interviewed by 60 Minutes, exposing the company's deception about nicotine's addictive properties. The interview faced intense legal pressure from Brown & Williamson, leading CBS to initially pull the segment, but it eventually aired after pressure from producers and media coverage. Wigand’s testimony was pivotal in the broader legal battle against Big Tobacco, contributing to a historic $246 billion settlement in 1998.
